ANSYS LUMERICAL

Ansys Lumerical: a photonics design and simulation environment linking devices to circuits and systems

Electromagnetic analysis of components, mode and propagation analysis, coupling with electrical and thermal effects, compact model preparation, and circuit and link evaluation. Ansys Lumerical comprises five products, each covering one layer of photonics design. LightBridge supports you from selection through deployment and everyday use.

The products and what each does

Five products, from device to circuit and system

From electromagnetic, mode and multiphysics analysis of a single device through compact model generation to circuit and system evaluation. Combine the products you need for the job in hand.

01

Device and electromagnetic analysis

Lumerical FDTD

Three-dimensional electromagnetic analysis of a single component

Analyzes fine structures on the order of a wavelength using the FDTD method. Use it to obtain the optical characteristics of individual components such as grating couplers, modulators and metasurfaces.

02

Mode and propagation analysis

Lumerical MODE

Analysis of waveguide modes and propagation

Performs eigenmode analysis of a waveguide cross-section and evaluates propagating structures such as tapers and bends. This is the foundation of the waveguide design that connects components.

03

Multiphysics analysis

Lumerical Multiphysics

Coupled electrical, thermal and optical analysis

Obtains carrier and temperature distributions and evaluates their effect on optical characteristics. Use it for components where electrical and thermal behavior matters, such as modulators and detectors.

Circuit and system simulation

Lumerical INTERCONNECT

Evaluation of photonic circuits and whole links

Assembles a circuit from compact models and evaluates link performance in the time and frequency domains. Co-simulation with electrical circuits is also supported.

05

Compact model generation

Lumerical CML Compiler

Preparing models for circuit simulation

Builds a compact model library from device analysis or measured data, for use in INTERCONNECT.

Common combinations

Connect the products, solve the system

There is no fixed order. Combine the products you need according to what you want to evaluate.

Device to circuit

  • FDTD / MODECML CompilerINTERCONNECT

Prepare compact models from component analysis results, then evaluate the performance of the whole link.

Electro-optic and thermo-optic devices

  • MultiphysicsFDTD / MODEINTERCONNECT

Feed carrier and temperature distributions into the optical analysis, and carry component models such as modulators through to circuit evaluation.

Lasers and active devices

  • Multiphysics / MODEINTERCONNECT

Obtain gain and spontaneous emission spectra, then handle semiconductor lasers and SOAs in INTERCONNECT.

Analysis Technologies

Which solver should you use?

The criteria for choosing at the level of the analysis method, including FDTD, FDE, EME, CHARGE and HEAT, are covered under Analysis Technologies. Start there if you want to reach the product from the method.
