A material platform built on silicon waveguides, on which active components such as modulators and photodetectors can be integrated on the same chip. It is widely used for photonic integrated circuits in optical communications and sensing.

When another platform should be considered

If low-loss passive circuits or the visible range are the main requirement, silicon nitride may suit better. If a light source has to be integrated on the chip, consider InP.
