Silicon Nitride (SiN)

A material platform with low loss and a wide transparency window. It is chosen for passive circuits and for applications from the visible to the near infrared. LightBridge can advise on the LIGENTEC SiN platform.

Material system

Silicon nitride (SiN) waveguides

Strengths

Low-loss passive circuits, visible to near infrared

Delivery model

This varies by foundry and by run. Please contact us.

Designs it suits

Waveguides, resonators and filters where propagation loss has to be kept down

Designs working at wavelengths from the visible to the near infrared

Circuits using optical confinement and dispersion as design variables

When another platform should be considered

If high-speed modulation and detection are central to the design, consider Silicon Photonics; if an on-chip source and optical amplification are central, consider Indium Phosphide. SiN also has options for integrating active functions, so judge from the target foundry’s coverage and your requirements.

Scope

Main design areas

Assess the fit of the platform from the target wavelength and how far loss has to be reduced.

01

Low-loss waveguides

Circuits are built on waveguides with propagation loss kept down.

02

Resonators and filters

Used in circuits built from resonators and wavelength filters.

03

Target wavelength

Covers a wide wavelength range, from the visible to the near infrared.

The layer stacks available and the design rules are set by the target foundry’s PDK.

Design workflow

How the design process works, including analysis and simulation, is covered under Solutions.

Tell us your target wavelength and your loss target

You do not need measured data. We will advise on the fit of the platform and how to proceed.
